How It Works

The Youth Intensive Virtual Recovery Program was developed in response to a growing need for intensive and comprehensive support, from the comfort of your own home for individuals aged 13 - 19.

The program is designed to allow you to recover within your life, while providing the level of intensive care typically only available in an in-patient or residential setting.

The Integration of mind, body, soul and family healing occurring concurrently throughout the duration of the program. Your family will be 100% supported, educated and empowered to recover from the safety of home.

The program is structured into 3 phases, each phase designed with a specific area of focus to gradually build up to full immersion in the recovery process, followed by a supported transitional period out of full support.

FAQs

  • The Youth Intensive Virtual Recovery Program is open to anyone aged 13 - 19 who is struggling with an eating disorder. You do not need to have a formal diagnosis to access services, and due to the individualized approach, all types of eating disorders are accepted.

There may be situations where At Home Care is not appropriate due to safety concerns, and the team will work with the family to determine a more suitable treatment protocol.

Our Registered Holistic Nutritionist has 10 years of experience with ED recovery and refeeding, and is able to ensure the safety and efficacy of refeeding at home for the majority of cases.

When exploring your treatment options, it is important to keep in mind that the Youth Intensive Virtual Recovery Program also requires a level of commitment and time from other members of the family as part of the program requirements. This is necessary as we integrate family healing into the structure of the program right from the beginning.

  • You do not need a referral from a medical professional to access the Youth Intensive Virtual Recovery Program. Our team will conduct a thorough assessment prior to starting the program to ensure it is the appropriate form of support for your child's current needs.

  • The Youth Intensive Virtual Recovery Program is 100% virtual; to ensure the safety of every client, the family will need access to a GP throughout the duration of the program to perform periodic labs (bloodwork, EKG etc) or another type of practitioner who will perform these in person tasks. Our ND and Holistic Nutritionist will review all lab work and adjust nutrition and supplementation protocols based off of the information. We will help guide the family on how to utilize their doctor effectively, and provide a list of all the medical monitoring tests required.

  • The Youth Intensive Virtual Recovery Program is designed to be comprehensive and inclusive, meaning every aspect has been intentionally incorporated to facilitate the greatest chance of success in recovery. Participants are not able to pick and choose which pieces they want for this particular option. If you have questions, or feel as though you would benefit from certain support and not others, please reach out directly to speak with our staff, as this fully intensive program may not be the right choice for your family, and we can help guide you with potential alternate options.

  • Phase 1: Onboarding is 4 weeks in length, with a gradual increase in the number of hours of support each week. This enables the family to adjust to the schedule, and helps limit the likelihood of refeeding syndrome for the individual in recovery.

Phase 2: Symptom Interruption and Physical Stabilization is 8 weeks of full intensive meal support and coaching. Prior to the end of the 8 weeks, your family will have a team meeting with staff to determine if any additional time at this phase is needed or recommended. Our program does not simply move a person into Phase 3 because 8 weeks have passed, rather, the individual graduates to Phase 3 when they are ready and stable in their recovery.

Phase 3: Exploring My ED is 4 weeks in length, starting to transition to less supervised meals with staff and more family lead nutrition, while the focus of support increases in the cognitive and emotional healing work of recovery.

  • If you have extended health benefits from your workplace (or a family members), your treatment may be partially covered. We will work with you to see what is covered by insurance.

  • This question is complex to answer, much like the complexities of eating disorders, and relies on how "recovery" is defined.

An individual who completes The Youth Intensive Virtual Program will be weight stabilized and asymptomatic (not actively engaging in any ED behaviours), and will have developed a strong tool box of self awareness, distress tolerance skills and emotional regulation strategies.

While recovery is a non linear journey, with full recovery sometimes taking years, research indicates individuals who seek treatment are most successful when they enter treatment early on in their diagnosis.

The recovery process is different for every individual once weight restoration and symptom reduction/cessation have been achieved. Full engagement in social and occupational activities, establishment of a meaningful life, cognitive flexibility, and emotional well-being can take longer, and it is worth noting that physical and behavioral recovery typically precede cognitive recovery.

  • As a parent/caregiver, you will also be fully supported and educated on how to support and facilitate recovery at home.

  • Your team will assess each client’s unique situation, and make a determination based on their physical stability and mental wellbeing. Some individuals may be able to attend school in person, or need a modified school schedule and course load for a period of time to ensure that recovery is the primary focus for the duration of the program. Depending on the severity of the eating disorder, some individuals may need to take a step back from school/work until they are stabilized and can return in a safe and supported manner.

  • We believe that recovery is a 24/7 job and does not end simply because the session is over; your team will be available between sessions via text or email to answer additional questions or concerns.

  • There is a gradual but steady increase to full intensive support, followed by a safe taper down of support in mental, physical & family readiness in phase 3.

The hours of support in each phase look as follows:

    Phase 1: Week 1= 10 hours, Week 2= 12.5 hours, Week 3= 17 hours , Week 4= 19 hours

Phase 2: 21-22 hours per week.

    Phase 3: Week 1= 16.5 hours, Week 2= 13.5 hours, Week 3= 11 hours , Week 4= 8.5 hours
